The Kraken > Le MA paysage, 2023

Structure made of woven willow branches, which comes to life with the changing seasons.
The Kraken is a unique work created by Le MA paysage and LAN (Laboratorio Architetture Naturali). This creation integrates harmoniously into the park while bringing a new artistic and ecological dimension.

Created at the end of 2023, The Kraken is a living plant sculpture designed in collaboration with local residents and associations. Composed of 4,000 willow poles, the work is inspired by the mythical Kraken from Nordic legends and utilizes ancient construction techniques with bundles, similar to those of the Mesopotamian Mudhif. It spans 50 meters in length, forming a series of woven and intertwined arches that symbolize unity and collective strength.

Situated on the former mining lands of the basin, this living sculpture reflects the history of the territory and its transformation. Unlike coal, which turned into a mineral from plant matter, The Kraken transforms into a plant from a mythical animal being, symbolizing rebirth and continuous evolution. It pays tribute to the values of solidarity, diversity, and collective courage that characterize the region.

The work is installed on a “lai” in the park of the Louvre-Lens Museum. The “lais” are strips of land provided in the park’s layout plan by landscape architect Catherine Mosbach. They offer experimental zones that echo the themes of the Museum, such as iconographic representations, architecture, mythology, and ethnobotany. Inspired by the principles of permaculture, this installation highlights the degrees of naturalness and the dynamic evolution of the site.

We would like to thank the Louvre-Lens as well as the participants: the BTS students of Lycée Jeanne Baret, the local mission of Lens-Liévin, the Maison du 9 association, the Vachala center, the Loos N’Gourma association, the Avenir des cités association, the Institut de Genech, the Café des voisins of Louvre-Lens, and the Les anges gardins association.

Le MA paysage et le Laboratorio Architetture Naturali (LAN) : Giulia Pignocchi, Julien Truglas, Michele Todisco, Francesco Poli et Alice Boidin

LE MA PAYSAGE is a Franco-Italian landscape architecture studio founded in 2014 by Giulia Pignocchi (Sapienza University of Architecture in Rome) and Julien Truglas (École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture et de Paysage de Lille). Recognized by the AJAP 2020, the NIBXII award, and the 2018 Trophy of Commitment, the studio is distinguished by its innovative and nomadic approach. It brings together multidisciplinary teams—including landscape architects, architects, ecologists, gardeners, and other experts—to meet the specific needs of each project. Le MA Paysage acts as a studio to revitalize neglected spaces, a laboratory to promote landscape architecture, and a garden to merge agriculture, art, and nature, while adopting responsible ecological and social practices. LE LAN, LABORATORIO ARCHITETTURE NATURALI: founded by architect Francesco Poli, specializes in the use of natural, plant-based, and recycled materials for architecture, design, and art. By combining architecture and land art, LAN creates works that harmonize built and natural environments, meeting human needs while respecting the ecosystem. The studio encourages self-construction, the rediscovery of traditional techniques, and sustainable innovation. By actively involving local communities, LAN promotes a culture of eco-sustainability and participatory cooperation, placing nature at the heart of its creations.
