Rangimarie > New Zealand Garden of Peace, 2018

On 4th November 1918, the town of Le Quesnoy was liberated by New Zealand troops. One hundred years later,  landscape gardener Xanthe White and her team, Zoë Carafice and Charmaine Bailie, commemorate the soldiers of their country as well as the inhabitants of Le Quesnoy, who for a century have watched over the souls of the fallen. The garden dedicated to them is based on a Maori expression, rangimarie, which is synonymous with peace. For Maori, rangimarie is the quiet space, such as walking in the company of ancestors in the hours before dawn. To thank the residents of Le Quesnoy, the three designers wanted to create one of these peaceful places: while the memorial reflects the story of the soldiers, the garden provides the time for a serene walk away from the sounds of everyday life, in the late evening and early morning, the special moments of the day to feel the rangimarie.

The artist

Xanthe White

Xanthe White was born in 1976 in Wellington (New Zealand). She lives and works in Auckland as a landscape gardener and has 25 years experience. Her agency XWD was founded in 2005, and now has eight employees. For Xanthe White, the role of the landscape artist is to act as a catalyst for the relationship between man and nature, through beauty and wonder. For this project, she has teamed up with Zoë Carafice, landscape architect at XWD and Charmaine Bailie, an eco-restoration expert.
