Vegetable gardens in High Schools – Calais > Green Resistance, 2020 – 2021
“In order to best solicit the participants and the users of this project,we have chosen to link the cultivated garden to sports. Among young people, and especially high school students, sport is surely one of the most popular activities and has very interesting values. In addition to being often played outdoors, sport incorporates notions of physical effort, rigor, precision and often collective coordination. Which can be compared to the practice of the vegetable garden / orchard and all that it can contain. The goal is to take advantage of the connection between sports and garden to build a fun and meaningfull project that concerns young people, teachers and management. The game is thus placed at the very foundation of the garden and educates its stakeholders. This common thread will be kept at each stage of the project to make it fun and participtory.
During the consultation, sports parctice will be a pretext to stimulate and question young people about space and matter. This consultation must then be taken into account for the design. It will be inspired by the actions taken to design the ground. The co-construction is then the culmination of this whole process, it involves all the more the participants on questions of how to do it. It will then be very interesting to make this exercise fun and sporty. A lot of ideas then emerge in our sporting imagination. The lines and elements that make up sports fields can be so many shapes to exploit, transform, hybridize, to play and to create the garden. The image of the multipurpose “City stadium” then comes to our mind, but also that of all the lines that can cover a gymnasium, and the nets and fences that partition the space and contain the material. These lines and structures can thus be reinterpreted, practiced and put the garden to good use.”
